About Canada Gives
A New Approach to Canadian Philanthropy
Canada Gives is a public foundation and registered charity, established in 2005 to support the expansion of philanthropic foundations and increase long-term giving opportunities for donors to make their legacy count in Canada and abroad.
Canada Gives offers committed philanthropists the most flexible and administratively simple way to support funding of their preferred charities through our customized Donor Advised Funds (DAFs).
Most of our DAFs operate as family foundations, giving donors the ability to fund their preferred charities to meet immediate needs, as well as creating a long term funding base to support charitable programs each year. Our unique philanthropic foundation administration platform enables donors in Canada to build a high-impact foundation.
Our Donor Advised Funds (also called “Foundation accounts”) allow a donor the same financial and philanthropic choices they would make with a separately registered private foundation – but with a much more flexible structure. At Canada Gives, each donor can select their own investment advisor to manage the assets in the Foundation account; they can recommend the registered charities that receive disbursements from the Foundation, and how much each should receive. Canada Gives ensures their choices follow CRA policies, and provide full administration and reporting services.
Canada Gives Clients can
Access Grant Connect
Many active Canadian foundations select and fund charities through a grant application process. Now Canada Gives Donor Advised Funds known as Foundation Accounts can join these leading funders in the not for profit sector through Grant Connect, an innovative research tool developed by Imagine Canada.
Our staff are also available to work with each donor client to determine their giving profile, and help them move from simply chequing writing to becoming committed foundation funders, highly valued participants in the not for profit sector.
Support for Global Giving
In 2012 Canada Gives expanded its charitable giving services to include funding for projects outside of Canada, through the Canada Gives Global Projects Initiative Program aimed at relieving poverty in developing countries. This is an ideal solution for donors that have philanthropic interests with non-Canadian charities but have previously been unable to benefit from Canadian tax considerations. Through a qualified Intermediary Contractor, Canada Gives provides the oversight and control to ensure funding is spent appropriately, activities are monitored and ultimately that foreign charitable projects are completed. Our goal is to ensure the project is designed to include sustainability with real outcomes and measurable results.
